Welcome
In an age that seems to favor specialization, a quickly changing world and uncertain future both point toward the value of transferable skills. Critical thinking, analysis, creativity and the abilities to write and speak clearly and persuasively are basic and essential skills that continue to provide students with the tools they need for inquiry, discovery, and engagement.
After 50 years of providing leadership to both individuals and institutions--AGLS continues to serve faculty and administrators who value learning. Our organization works by providing models of teaching and leadership to develop and enhance programs of general education and liberal studies.
To bring attention to and recognition of excellence in general and liberal education AGLS presents three major annual awards for leadership and service:
- The Jerry Gaff Faculty Award given annually based on nominations by peers,
- The Joseph Katz for Outstanding Leadership in General Education given every other year based on nominations made by the AGLS Executive Council, and
- The AGLS Exemplary Program Award presented annually based on thematic criteria set each year by the Executive Council.
The Executive Council issues occasional position statements and publishes occasional commissioned papers on important topics in general and liberal studies. In 2010-11, AGLS will advance our efforts to provide access to these materials and begin providing advice and support through social media.
The membership and leaders of AGLS hold a common belief that the while the content and delivery of general and liberal studies may vary from campus to campus, these challenging times actually provide all of us with exceptional opportunities to improve student learning.
The Association’s annual national conference held each fall will remain as the focal point of what we do. These friendly, collegial meetings provide sessions on pedagogy, curriculum, leadership, assessment and other accreditation issues linked to general education. Come join us on line, and from October 6-8 in Miami, Florida at the 2011 National Conference.
